We often get to hear that deforestation, which can be attributed to a wide range of human activities including agriculture and logging, is to be blamed for several environmental issues that planet Earth is facing today. While destruction of forest cover can be attributed to natural processes such as volcanoes and landslides as well, their role in this destruction is easily overshadowed by the role played by humans. Does that mean deforestation and population rise are directly related to each other? There is absolutely no doubt about the fact that rising population tends to put a great deal of pressure on natural resources; and when we say natural resources we don’t just refer to fossil fuels and water, which we directly come in contact with, but also refer to the forests, marine resources, etc., which, though indirectly, play a crucial role in our lives. Nevertheless, here we will stress on the relationship between deforestation and population growth, in a bid to see how the rise in population can contribute to the destruction of forest cover.

Deforestation and Population Growth

According to a report compiled by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), approximately 80 percent of the deforestation in the world today is attributed to agriculture (i.e. 48 percent to subsistence agriculture and 32 percent to commercial agriculture). Of the remaining 20 percent, roughly around 14 percent is attributed to logging, 5 percent to the use of firewood and remaining is utilized for other purposes. All these human activities which are considered to be the causes of deforestation invariably rise with the rise in population. For instance, population growth is directly related to increase in the demand for food. In order to meet this demand for food, we have to produce more crop. In order to produce more crop, we require more land; and to get more land for cultivation we have started encroaching upon the forestland, cutting down trees and turning vast tracts of lush green forests into large fields.

Deforestation in forested areas starts with human settlements mushrooming in near-forest areas. As time elapses, these settlers begin producing their own food by resorting to subsistence agriculture for which they begin clearing forest land. If the fertility of soil is less, the crop produce is low which prompts humans to cultivate more area and leads to further encroachment on forestland. While this practice is indeed helpful for us humans, species which inhabit these forested areas have to bear the brunt of this practice. Even in the age of metals, we are highly dependent on timber when it comes to construction; and this timber comes from felling of trees in various parts of the world (see why does deforestation happen). Large tracts of forestland are also cleared to fulfill the vested interests of the bigwigs in mining lobby with strong political influences.

The rapid rate at which forests are converted to agricultural lands can be attributed to the belief that forest conversion is more beneficial for humans than forest conservation. Since 1970, somewhere around 232,000 square miles of Amazon forest has been cleared to make way for agriculture and to obtain timber for construction activity. Even today, these forests are cleared at the rate of 1.5 acres per second; which in turn has left several species in these forests endangered. This destruction of tropical rainforests, like the Amazon, is bound to affect the planet as a whole as these forests are home to half the species of plants and animals on the planet. (Not to forget, these forests are referred to as the lungs of our planet as they produce a significant amount of atmospheric oxygen that we require to survive.)

Population Density and Deforestation

Studies have revealed that the forest cover of a particular region can only be retained when the density of population for that region is low. When population density is as low as two people per sq km, it is possible to keep forest cover intact as the population can be sustained on non-timber forest products rather than resorting to agriculture. However, this low population density has become more of a mythical concept of late; with the population density of the world (total land area excluding the continent of Antarctica) reaching 51 people per sq km of late. Similarly, sparsely populated regions of the world are also subjected to a considerable amount of deforestation with external factors such as timber requirement in the field of construction or cattle rearing coming into play.

With that we covered a significant bit of information on how deforestation is related to population growth. While population growth continues to fuel deforestation, the effects of deforestation on population are also becoming pretty obvious in the form of climate change and related environmental issues which has put us on toes of late. That explains why developed nations like the United States and Russia have gone into a damage control mode, and are trying their best to recover forest cover which they lost to extensive deforestation during the initial phase of economic development.

How to Make Algae Biofuel



The best way to go about understanding a how is to first get a good understanding of the what involved – that’s one principle that I believe in and live by! Hence, before proceeding towards understanding how to make algae biofuel, let’s take a closer look at what algae biofuel is all about. As the name suggests, this type of fuel is derived from algae and the method most commonly used is breaking down the alga’s carbohydrate content via fermentation. How to Make Algae Biofuel at Home?

Here are a few simple steps that you can easily follow to produce biofuel from algae, more or less the same way as algae biofuel companies do. So, here we go:-

  • Prepare the proper growing environment for cultivating the algal variety of your choice. Conventional cultivation environments include still water bodies such as shallow ponds or waste water holes. You may also use plastic bottles, tubes or any other plastic container but then, the water needs to be refreshed at regular intervals.   • The last step is refinement of the oil for getting the desired fuel, be it biodiesel, biogasoline or biobutanol. In order to refine the extracted lipids, you need to subject the crude oil to various separation processes, depending upon the particular type of algal biofuel you need. A centrifuge is usually employed for conducting most of these separation processes.

Store the algal biofuel in properly secured containers and keep the containers away from heat and flames as these can catch fire as easily as conventional fossil fuel based oils. As far as the environmental impact is concerned, algal biofuel is about as polluting as conventional fossil fuels. Moreover, when burned to produce heat, their thermal output is also somewhat lower than that of conventional fossil fuels. However, being easy to grow and, therefore, infinitely renewable, algal biofuel does bring us a lot of hope in the face of eternally skyrocketing oil and gas prices.

Reinstall the wheel assembly and tighten the nuts securely. Take the car off the jack stands slowly to rest on the ground. Do not forget to connect the negative terminal back on the battery, without which the ABS sensors won’t work. During the replacement, you can even think about replacing the sensor cable as well. The total cost of the DIY project might come to around $50, just for the price of a new sensor and cable.

Many a times, a simple cleanup of the sensor setup is more than enough to resolve ABS problems. For effective functioning of the system, do a periodical cleanup of the sensors on all wheels. How Metamorphic Rocks are Formed



Rocks found on the Earth are broadly categorized into three types – sedimentary rocks (which are formed as a result of sedimentation of matter), igneous rocks (which are formed as a result of volcanic activity) and metamorphic rocks (which are formed as a result of some existing rock type undergoing the process of metamorphism.) Metamorphic rocks are the least common of the three types of rocks, and that explains why people are not aware of some of the most basic facts about them – including how they are formed, what are their different types and what are they used for.

Formation of Metamorphic Rocks

Even though least common of the three types, metamorphic rocks are a bit unique as they form from an existing sedimentary rock, igneous rock or an old metamorphic rock. In lithology, i.e. the branch of geology which studies various attributes of rocks, the parent rock of any metamorphic rock is referred to as the ‘protolith’. While limestone happens to be the protolith of marble, shale is the protolith for slate and sandstone for quartzite. These metamorphic rocks are formed when their respective protoliths are exposed to immense heat and pressure; to an extent that this exposure brings about physical or chemical changes in them and results in formation of new rock. To a certain extent the tectonic movement and volcanic activity also contribute to the formation of metamorphic rocks.

The process by which metamorphic rocks are formed by transformation of an existing rock type is referred to as ‘metamorphism’. A technically sound definition of metamorphism would be the recrystallization of an existing rock as a result of the physical and chemical changes in its surroundings without changing its solid state. These changes include heat exceeding 302°F, pressure exceeding 1500 bars and the presence of chemically active fluids in the vicinity. The heat and pressure that these rocks are exposed to increases with depth. At times, the plutonic body can provide heat required for the process of metamorphism even when the rock is not lying at great depths as such.

In course of metamorphic rock formation, the bonds between atoms in a mineral are broken and allowed to rearrange. As the new bonds are subjected to a great deal of heat and pressure, they turn out to be more stable than the previous bonds. Those rocks which lie buried deep beneath are exposed to lithostatic pressure i.e. the pressure exerted from material sitting above these rocks, which is usually equal from all sides. The pressure exerted on rocks from a particular side as a result of collision or subduction of tectonic plates along their boundary is referred to as ‘directed pressure’. Even though this sort of pressure is not sufficient to facilitate new mineralization, it does have the ability to affect the shape and arrangement of these minerals. The banding of mineral under directed pressure results in formation of ‘foliated metamorphic rocks’. These rocks are totally different from ‘non-foliated metamorphic rocks’ which are formed in absence of directed pressure.
